Could Your Wedding Guests Become Guest DJs? A Different Take on Wedding Entertainment

I recently received a wedding DJ enquiry that really got me thinking about how much more personal wedding entertainment could be.
The couple explained that music had played a huge part in their friendships over the years. Rather than simply having their friends request songs, they wanted to give them an opportunity to actually get involved in the music.
Their idea? Let different groups of friends come behind the DJ decks and help cue up songs that represent their friendships and shared memories.
Not to take over the DJing, but to have a little moment of their own, with me guiding them and keeping everything running smoothly.
And I thought, what a fantastic idea!
Making Your Wedding Music More Personal
When you think about it, so many of our friendships are connected to music.
There’s the song you played endlessly at university, the anthem from your first festival together, or that ridiculously cheesy track that somehow became your friendship group’s unofficial theme tune.
These songs might not feature on a typical wedding playlist, but they often carry far more meaning than the usual wedding favourites.
So why not give those memories their own moment during your reception?
Imagine your university friends stepping behind the decks to introduce the song that defined your nights out, or your childhood friends choosing a track that instantly transports everyone back twenty years.
It’s a lovely way to celebrate the people who’ve been part of your story.
But Wouldn’t This Interrupt the DJ Set?
Not necessarily!
As a professional wedding DJ, I’d still be responsible for the music, mixing, equipment and overall flow of the evening.
The idea wouldn’t be to hand over control of the decks and hope for the best!
Instead, everything could be planned beforehand, with selected songs incorporated into the evening at appropriate moments.
Guests could then step up and help cue their chosen track under my guidance, creating a fun, interactive experience without disrupting the party.
It’s about finding that balance between personalisation and keeping the dancefloor moving.
Other Ways to Involve Your Wedding Guests
Of course, you don’t necessarily have to invite your guests behind the decks.
You could ask guests to suggest a song that reminds them of you when they RSVP, dedicate a short section of the evening to different friendship groups, or incorporate meaningful tracks into your drinks reception and wedding breakfast.
Not every song needs to be a dancefloor anthem. Sometimes, a familiar track playing in the background can be just as meaningful to the people who recognise it.
Your Wedding Doesn’t Have to Follow a Formula
One of the things I love most about being a wedding DJ is discovering how different everyone’s musical tastes and experiences are.
Some couples want wall-to-wall dancefloor classics. Others love indie, rock, alternative music, UK garage or dance anthems. And some want something completely different.
There’s no rule that says your wedding reception has to sound like everybody else’s.
This particular enquiry reminded me that wedding entertainment can be about more than simply playing music people enjoy.
It can also be about celebrating the connections, friendships and memories that make your wedding uniquely yours.
And personally, I’d love to see more couples exploring ideas like this!
