Where Are All the Female Wedding DJs in Hampshire?

As a female wedding DJ based in Hampshire, I became curious about how often women appeared on local venue supplier lists. This article shares what I observed and why I think it’s an interesting conversation, not a criticism of any venue or supplier.

When couples start planning their wedding, one of the first places they often look for suppliers is their venue’s recommended supplier list.

These lists can be incredibly helpful. They introduce couples to trusted photographers, florists, cake makers, celebrants, musicians and, of course, DJs.

While researching recommended supplier lists across Hampshire venues, I noticed something that genuinely surprised me.

Female DJs were remarkably difficult to find.

An observation, not a criticism

Before I go any further, this isn’t an article about blaming venues or suggesting male DJs don’t deserve their place on recommended supplier lists.

Many of them have spent years building excellent reputations and strong relationships with venues. They absolutely deserve recognition for the work they do.

Instead, this article is about something much simpler.

Visibility.

Why does visibility matter?

For many couples, it probably doesn’t matter whether their DJ is male or female.

They’re looking for someone professional, reliable and capable of filling the dance floor.

But for some couples, having the option to choose a female DJ is important.

Perhaps they simply connect more with another woman’s personality. Perhaps they’re hoping for a different musical perspective. Or perhaps they just like having a wider range of suppliers to choose from.

Choice is rarely a bad thing.

Wedding suppliers have become wonderfully diverse

Over the past decade, the wedding industry has evolved enormously.

Couples now have more options than ever before.

Celebrants come from a huge variety of backgrounds. Wedding photographers each have their own distinctive style. Musicians cover everything from classical string quartets to roaming saxophonists and acoustic duos.

DJs, however, still appear to be one of the areas where female representation remains relatively uncommon, particularly when looking at publicly available recommended supplier lists.

That doesn’t necessarily mean female DJs aren’t working in Hampshire.

It may simply mean they’re less visible.

Why might that be?

There probably isn’t one single answer.

DJing has historically been a male-dominated profession, particularly within clubs, bars and mobile entertainment.

Venue relationships also tend to develop over many years. Many recommended suppliers have worked alongside venues hundreds of times, building trust through consistency and reliability.

Some venues recommend entertainment agencies rather than individual performers, meaning couples don’t always know who will actually be performing at their wedding.

There are also practical realities. If fewer women enter the profession in the first place, naturally fewer will appear on supplier lists.

It’s likely a combination of all of these factors rather than any one reason alone.

Why this conversation is worth having

This isn’t about replacing one group with another.

It’s about making sure talented suppliers are visible enough for couples to discover them.

Every entertainer brings something different.

Different musical influences.

Different performance experiences.

Different personalities.

Different ways of connecting with guests.

The more choice couples have, the easier it becomes to find someone whose style genuinely fits their wedding.

What should couples look for?

Whether your DJ is male or female, the same things matter:

● Can they read a room rather than simply play a playlist?

● Are they experienced at weddings?

● Do they communicate well throughout the planning process?

● Do they have excellent reviews?

● Are they fully insured with professional equipment?

● Do they understand the atmosphere you’re hoping to create?

Those qualities will always matter more than gender.

Looking ahead

The wedding industry is constantly changing.

More women are entering DJing than ever before, bringing fresh ideas, different musical backgrounds and unique performance styles to weddings across the country.

My hope is simply that, over time, couples continue to see an even broader range of talented professionals represented throughout the industry.

Because at the end of the day, wedding entertainment isn’t about ticking boxes.

It’s about finding the person who understands your vision, creates unforgettable moments and keeps your favourite people dancing together.

And the more choice couples have, the better.
